Around the globe, that is probably the most famous string of characters that almost any software programmer have used to test their first lines of code. It was for me on my first QBasic, Pascal and Cobol programs I made back in my college years in the mid 90s.
15 years later, things had changed a little bit… well actually a lot! The internet has revolutionized the world. It has erased territorial and cultural boundaries, it has changed the way people communicate and even the way people think. Now, almost anyone can have a video conversation with someone at the other side of the planet, for free! Social networks are taking over. This kind of things were unthinkable as little as 20 years ago.
One of the beauties of the Internet, is that it provides people the ability to share information. Massive loads of information. Blogging is definitely, one of those ways of sharing information massively. Anyone can create a blog site in less than 5 minutes and start publishing content right away. It is amazingly easy.
Why I decided to start blogging?
Well, it is simply because I want to help others with pertinent and valued content. 80% of the times I’m in search for a solution, I find it on another's people blogs. This happens to me almost every day. Personally, I think I have accumulated a big deal of knowledge in my professional practice, that I think is unfair not to share it with the world, considering how much I have benefit from others content. So, I’m basically being grateful and paying back the favor to the universe. Although my first language is Spanish, most of the content will be in English, simply because it’ll reach a broader audience.
Who am I
Hello everyone. My name is Carlos Bercero. I’m a proud and happy father and husband. I was borne and live in the beautiful Island of Puerto Rico.
Software development is one of my passions, and happens to be what I do for a living. I work for this great company called Nagnoi, located here in the island of the enchantment.
Although I’ve played many chess pieces in this IT game board, I’ve been doing mostly software development since 2001. Within that broad spectrum, I’m specialized in the following:
.NET development; ASP, Win Forms, Class Libraries, Console Apps, etc… using VB and C# but mostly VB.
SQL Databases design, development and implementation.
What is this blog about
I will write a post of most technical challenge I stumble upon at my job and my personal projects (like this blog, for example). Also I will write about my own discoveries and solutions for specific problems. I will try to be as neutral, concise and strait-to-the-point as possible with real life illustrations and code samples.
My own blogging platform, why?
In case you didn’t noticed, this is not a Blogger or WordPress blog. This is my own, just finished, custom built blog application. Why would I re-invent the wheel? Well, two reasons, for fun and… for fun! Yes, although is time consuming, I enjoy doing this. I said once that if I would start blogging, I’ll do it over my own software.
It is built with ASP.NET and SQL Server 2008 and I’ve implemented the basics; Hierarchical Categories, Archive, Search (using SQL Full Text Search), RSS feed, Sitemap, Comments (with my own anti-spam image generator), and most important, a Windows Live Writer API.
Stepping aside, I’ve implemented a unique cool way of navigation, allowing the user to combine filters from the Archive, Categories and the Search. The breadcrumb trail always tells you where you’re at, and the Next and Previous Posts sections are filtered within the current selection.
The look and feel needs a little work, I know. It will get better over time, I promise.
Features in the pipeline to be implemented:
Links to link sites like Digg, Delicious, etc.
